ABSTRACT

The mitral valve prolapse is a common pathology, with a prevalence of 2.4%. Mostly the disease is asymptomatic, but without any treatment the disease can progress to the severe mitral regurgitation and heart failure. The mitral valve prolapse is most commonly diagnosed by echocardiography or accidental auscultation, hearing the murmur at the apex of the heart. In the case of severe mitral regurgitation, surgical treatment is recommended.
